According to county staff records, during the first round of the homeowner grant program, its staff approved 1,263 of the 1,989 applications it received and disbursed $378,900.00 in grants. Grants totaling $90,600.00 and $10,000.00 were given out by the cities of Asheville and Woodfin, respectively.

The Board of Commissioners approved $300,000.00 for the program as part of the FY23 budget. In unincorporated Buncombe County, you may be eligible for up to $300.00, and in Asheville and Woodfin, you may be eligible for up to $500.00. These funds are not paid directly to homeowners. Applications started on July 1st and will end on September 30th.

“We want to make sure we’re serving the population I think commissioners intended for us to serve,” Buncombe Economic Services Director Phillip Hardin said in March. “We learned a lot through the last year.”

There are specific requirements that must be met to be eligible. The property must be the applicant’s primary and only residence and it must be owned for at least 5 years. The applicant’s household income must be at or below 80% of the Area Median Income and they cannot have more than $60,000.00 in assets, including cash and all checking & savings accounts
