Get Help with Ida Recovery: Apply for NJ Homeowner and Renter Programs

New Jersey residents who were impacted by the remnants of Hurricane Ida can now breathe a sigh of relief as two new programs were launched on Monday to provide assistance to renters and homeowners. These programs are funded by the federal Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery, and aim to support those who were affected by the devastating storm.
The first program, called the Homeowner Assistance and Recovery Program, is designed to provide families with funds to help restore their storm-damaged homes. Homeowners who earned up to $250,000 can apply for this program to cover expenses related to the reconstruction, utility retrofits, or elevation of their homes. To qualify for this program, the home must have sustained at least $8,000 worth of damages or experienced at least one foot of flooding. Additionally, the home must be located in one of the following counties: Bergen, Essex, Gloucester, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Union, or Warren. Homeowners who are interested in this program can apply through May 1, either by filling out the application online at tinyurl.com/IDAharp or by calling 609-292-3750 to request a paper application or complete the form over the phone.
The second program, the Tenant-Based Rental Assistance Program, is geared towards low-income renters who were affected by Ida. This program aims to help renters who are still displaced, at risk of becoming homeless, or living in housing that is not “safe, stable, sanitary or affordable.” Eligible renters can apply for a subsidy to cover their rent, utilities, application fees, or security deposits. The subsidy will exceed 30% of the renters’ monthly income, and families must earn 120% or less of the county’s median income or be collecting any other subsidy to qualify.
