Longtime Homeowner Grant Program
The Longtime Homeowner Grant is intended to help longtime Durham residents who have seen their property taxes rise as a result of the city’s redevelopment efforts in the Southside, Walltown, Northeast Central Durham (NECD), and Southwest Central Durham (SWCD) target areas.
To be eligible, applicants must own and live in their primary dwelling, and have lived in the property since July 1, 2012. They also must have their property tax responsibilities increased as a result of the 2015 property tax assessment, and the 2020 property taxes are higher than their property taxes in 2015. They also must own property in the target areas of the Southside, Walltown, NECD, or SWCD. Properties in the target areas of Northeast and Southwest Central Durham must be close to a City of Durham housing investment made between 2010 and 2015.
The Longtime Homeowner Grant has an income requirement too. The income for the 2020 calendar year cannot exceed the program’s ceiling, which is set at 80% of or less than the HUD median family income for the Durham-Chapel Hill NC HUD Metro FMR area. The maximum program income is determined by the number of people in your home.
The City is not currently accepting applications for the Longtime Homeowner Grant Program.
The City of Durham, Carolina del Norte also administers a DSS Low Income Homeowner Relief (LIHR) Program. This program helps low-income Durham residents with their taxes.
