$10M Boost from Maricopa County for Affordable Housing Initiatives

PHOENIX — In a significant move to address housing challenges, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors recently greenlit a $10 million initiative aimed at transforming a hotel into a senior living facility and constructing a new rental community for low-income families. This decision reflects the county’s commitment to providing affordable and accessible housing solutions in Phoenix, the county’s largest city.

Clint Hickman, chairman of the Board of Supervisors, emphasized the project’s importance, stating, “We’re channeling these funds directly into our community, ensuring that our senior citizens have a dignified place to live, and families can afford a home where they can prosper and grow.”

The initiative, funded by the federal American Rescue Plan Act, is expected to positively impact approximately 550 individuals. Both the senior housing project and the low-income family rental community will receive $5 million each, in a collaborative effort with the city of Phoenix.

The senior housing project involves converting a 125-room hotel at 8130 N. Black Canyon Highway into a specialized facility for individuals aged 55 and above, particularly targeting those experiencing homelessness. The conversion will result in studio units, including rooms that are either accessible or adaptable to accommodate residents with disabilities. This project is not just about providing shelter; it’s about creating a supportive environment where seniors can live with dignity and independence.

A unique aspect of this senior housing project is the reservation of 40 units specifically for individuals whose household income is at or below 30 percent of the Area Median Income. These units will offer more than just a place to stay; they will include on-site support services, such as access to employment and career training opportunities, to help residents regain stability and improve their quality of life.

The second part of this initiative focuses on building a rental community for low-income families. This project aims to create a safe, affordable living space where families can establish a stable home. By addressing the housing needs of both seniors and low-income families, Maricopa County is taking a holistic approach to tackle the broader issue of housing insecurity in the region.

Overall, this $10 million investment by Maricopa County marks a significant step towards enhancing the living conditions of its most vulnerable residents, demonstrating a strong commitment to building a more inclusive and supportive community.
