Addressing Regional Needs: Senator Quinn Unveils Budget for Northern Wisconsin

Northern Legislators, including myself, have successfully brought much-needed funding back to our region with the recent budget. I am proud to have authored several budget motions that have been included in the financing plan, ensuring that your tax dollars are utilized for critical area projects. Some of the key provisions in this budget include:

  1. Smooth Operation of the Madeline Island-Bayfield Ferry Line: Funding has been allocated to ensure the seamless operation of the ferry line, connecting Madeline Island and Bayfield.
  2. Upgrades to Fish Hatcheries: A total of $2.5 million has been earmarked for essential upgrades to fish hatcheries in Bayfield and Douglas Counties, supporting our vibrant fishing industry.
  3. Enhancements to the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory: The budget allocates funds for the necessary upgrades to the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Barron, which plays a vital role in supporting our dairy and poultry industries.
  4. Additional Support for State Parks: Pattison and Amnicon Falls State Parks will receive additional funding to improve facilities and enhance visitors’ experiences.
  5. Blatnik Bridge Replacement: Recognizing the significance of transportation infrastructure, the budget includes $400 million in bonds and new funds to replace the Blatnik Bridge, connecting Superior and Duluth.
  6. Addressing Healthcare Needs: An allocation of $5 million has been dedicated to attracting more nurses to rural healthcare providers, ensuring quality healthcare access for our communities.

In addition to these specific projects, this budget bill also supports legislative priorities that we worked hard to pass earlier this year. Notably, it reserves $2 million for pre-disaster flood mitigation grants, benefiting areas like Ashland County that face recurring flooding challenges. Furthermore, a centerpiece of this budget is the allocation of $525 million towards revolving loan programs, aimed at promoting affordable and workforce housing. This initiative is crucial for communities throughout the 25th Senate District and the entire state.

This budget also prioritizes assistance for our most vulnerable populations. It provides $195 million to address staffing challenges in nursing homes, ensuring quality care for our seniors. Additionally, $41 million has been allocated for new mental health resources, addressing the pressing need for improved mental healthcare services. The budget also reserves $15 million to support childcare centers in expanding their capacity, aligning with upcoming legislation on this matter.

I am truly proud of the collaborative effort that went into crafting this budget. There are numerous remarkable aspects to highlight, and I look forward to discussing them further as I engage with constituents throughout the district. I urge Governor Evers to sign this budget without delay or changes, enabling these funding increases to promptly make a positive impact in Northern Wisconsin.
