Alabama’s Funding Program for Home Strengthening Projects
Homeowners in Alabama have a unique opportunity to enhance the resilience of their homes through the Strengthen Alabama Homes (SAH) grant program. To be eligible for this grant, homeowners must meet several criteria. Firstly, they must own and occupy the house as their primary residence. The home should be in a state of good repair, and homeowners must provide proof of active homeowners insurance and wind insurance policies. Additionally, if the home is located in a special flood hazard area, flood insurance is also required. A crucial step in the qualification process involves obtaining a home evaluation from a Certified FORTIFIED™ Evaluator.
The SAH grant generously covers the entire cost of mitigation efforts up to $10,000. In cases where the mitigation exceeds this amount, the homeowner is responsible for the additional costs.
To apply for the SAH grant, homeowners must first create a profile on the SAH platform, answer specific questions, and upload necessary documents, including income verification and insurance declaration pages. The next step involves selecting a FORTIFIED™ Evaluator to conduct a thorough home evaluation. Once the home successfully passes this evaluation, the applicant is required to obtain bids for the required work from three SAH-qualified and trained contractors. After receiving all three bids, the applicant will be issued a grant award letter. It’s important to note that all contracts for mitigation work are established directly between the contractor and the homeowner. Upon completion of the mitigation work and the achievement of an IBHS FORTIFIED™ designation, SAH will directly pay the contractor up to the grant amount specified in the award letter on behalf of the homeowner.
