Apply Now: Home Energy Assistance Program Open for Applications
The Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities has proudly announced the opening of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for the season, starting Wednesday, November 1. This invaluable program, underpinned by federal funding, is dedicated to ensuring that no household in the state has to endure the harsh New England winters without adequate heating. LIHEAP offers financial support to cover a portion of the winter heating expenses for eligible families, ensuring that warmth is accessible to all during the coldest months.
Residents in need can now submit their applications for assistance through the user-friendly online portal at toapply.org/massliheap. The program is designed to provide economic relief from November 1, 2023, through to the end of April 2024. It’s an inclusive initiative, welcoming applications from both homeowners and renters across the state. Local agencies are also available to facilitate the application process for those who prefer or require in-person assistance.
To be considered for LIHEAP, applicants must meet certain criteria that take into account the size of the household and the total gross income of all adult members. The program is comprehensive, extending its benefits to cover various heating sources such as oil, electricity, natural gas, propane, kerosene, wood, and coal. Even households where heating costs are included in the rent are eligible to apply, ensuring that the program reaches those in diverse living situations.
Payments from LIHEAP go directly to the heating vendors, simplifying the process for recipients and ensuring that the funds are used for their intended purpose. This direct payment system also helps to maintain good standing with energy providers throughout the winter season.
Secretary of Housing and Livable Communities, Ed Augustus Jr., emphasizes that the program is a testament to Massachusetts’ commitment to its residents, stating, “The Massachusetts home energy assistance program is free, because no resident should have to worry about heating their home during the wintertime.” This statement underscores the state’s dedication to livable communities where every individual can find solace and security in their home, regardless of income.
