Black Men Buy Houses": A Specialized Workshop on Homeownership

HOUSTON, Texas — Homeownership, a cornerstone of the American dream, remains an elusive goal for many Black men due to various systemic barriers and challenges. Kevan Shelton, a seasoned developer and founder of Park Street Homes, is well aware of these obstacles. Drawing from his own journey to homeownership, as well as his professional experiences, Shelton is taking actionable steps to foster change.

In a groundbreaking collaboration with multiple organizations in Houston, Shelton is launching the “Black Men Buy Houses Workshop.” This complimentary event aims to serve as a comprehensive resource hub, designed to equip Black men with essential tools for financial success, such as credit repair, down payment assistance, and strategies to build generational wealth.

The event organizers are anticipating a strong turnout, with an expected 600 participants slated to attend. The workshop reflects a deep commitment to uplifting the community, and in line with this mission, a $5,000 grant will be awarded to one fortunate attendee. This grant can be applied toward the purchase of a new home and is slated to be disbursed at the conclusion of the workshop on September 30.

But the financial opportunities don’t end there. Bank of America has generously committed to providing an additional $17,000 in grant funds, available to participants who meet the qualifying criteria. These grants can go a long way in making homeownership a reality for more Black men.

“The end goal is empowerment,” says Shelton. “We want individuals to leave this workshop with not just information, but actionable steps they can take to truly own their financial futures and contribute to building stronger communities for everyone.”

The Black Men Buy Houses Workshop is scheduled for this Saturday, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., at The Power Center, located at 12401 South Post Oak Road. It promises to be an invaluable experience for anyone looking to navigate the complexities of the housing market and break down the barriers to homeownership.
