Building a Brighter Future: Liberty Mutual Foundation Grants $75,000 for Home Rebuilding in Dorchester and Mattapan

BOSTON, Massachusetts – Rebuilding Together Boston, a prominent local nonprofit dedicated to community development, proudly announced today that the Liberty Mutual Foundation has bestowed upon them a substantial grant totaling $75,000. This generous contribution is aimed at supporting homeowners and nonprofit community centers in the vibrant neighborhoods of Dorchester and Mattapan.

The Liberty Mutual Foundation, known for its commitment to fostering housing stability, youth empowerment, and young adult workforce development, allocated $40,000 for both FY24 and FY25 in Dorchester, MA, and an additional $35,000 for FY23 and FY24 in Mattapan. These funds serve as a testament to their unwavering dedication to making a positive impact within these communities.

Thanks to the Liberty Mutual Foundation’s benevolence, Rebuilding Together Boston has already begun implementing transformative projects. In Mattapan, the funding has enabled the revitalization of the Gallivan Community Center, a pivotal hub for local residents. Additionally, three homes in Mattapan, MA, have undergone crucial renovations, creating safer and more functional living spaces.

As Rebuilding Together Boston continues its mission, the spotlight now shifts to Dorchester, MA, where equally impactful initiatives are set to unfold. One particularly compelling project involves the renovation of a home belonging to a young adult with learning challenges. The objective is to provide a safe and conducive living environment, allowing the young adult to live independently while receiving the care and support of their devoted mother. Furthermore, Rebuilding Together Boston’s vision encompasses the restoration of other homes and the enhancement of vital community spaces, fostering a sense of unity and well-being among residents.

Janice Walker, the Executive Director of Rebuilding Together Boston, expressed immense gratitude to the Liberty Mutual Foundation, stating, “We are extremely grateful to the Liberty Mutual Foundation for supporting Rebuilding Together Boston. Their commitment to repairing homes and revitalizing communities for our neighbors is truly commendable. This assistance is invaluable in ensuring that homes and facilities are not only safe but also fully operational.”

One of the most touching narratives emerging from Dorchester involves a homeowner of Honduran descent, who, despite facing numerous challenges, has persevered and put herself through college. She lovingly adopted her son, who faces delayed developmental disabilities due to prenatal exposure to substances. Currently, her son is being prepared for entry into the workforce through high school education, but he will require lifelong care and will not be able to live independently. In response to this, Rebuilding Together Boston intends to renovate the semi-finished basement into a suitable living space for her son, a project that embodies Liberty Mutual’s focus on improving housing stability for youth, low-income families, and individuals with disabilities.

Rebuilding Together Boston serves a diverse range of individuals, including veterans, older adults, families, and disaster survivors. Their array of essential home repairs, encompassing flooring, weatherization, roofing, handrails, accessibility modifications, painting, landscaping, and major rehabilitations, are provided at no cost to those in need. Many of these individuals are confronted with limited resources and often face difficult choices between essential home repairs and other daily necessities like food and medicine.

The organization brings together skilled workers, tradespeople, volunteers, and community members to address the urgent needs of the community. In the spirit of inclusivity, 95% of those they assist are Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color (BIPOC). Prospective clients must complete an application and provide supporting documentation, including proof of homeownership and income. The hallmark of Rebuilding Together Boston’s work is its unwavering dedication to preserving affordable housing, stabilizing neighborhoods, and mitigating housing instability and homelessness.

Over the past three decades, Rebuilding Together Boston has successfully completed over 600 renovation projects, representing an estimated total value exceeding $8 million.
