Caledonia and Orange Counties Now Part of Federal Disaster Declaration

FEMA officials have made a crucial announcement, including Caledonia and Orange Counties in the federal major disaster declaration, expanding the coverage to eight counties in total. This declaration comes in the aftermath of last week’s catastrophic flooding, which left dumpsters and piles of flood-related debris strewn across many Vermont communities. The daunting task of cleanup and recovery remains a top priority for state and federal authorities.

Governor Phil Scott, along with state and federal officials, emphasized the urgency of the cleanup process to facilitate a smooth transition to the recovery phase. Prompt cleanup by municipalities is essential in laying the foundation for rebuilding lives and communities.

While FEMA grants provide vital support for affected individuals, the business community has raised concerns as it does not qualify for these grants. However, the good news is that low-interest loans through the Small Business Administration (SBA) are available to eligible businesses. To assist businesses in navigating this process, a webinar has been scheduled to provide clarity and guidance.

Governor Scott acknowledged that while SBA loans are helpful, they may not be sufficient for many businesses, underscoring the need for additional support. The governor and his team are working diligently to secure funding for affected businesses, and they have managed to make $20 million available as a crucial lifeline to help them get back on their feet. Although this funding may not completely compensate for the losses, it aims to have a swift impact in reestablishing operations and rehiring employees.

Commerce Secretary Lindsay Kurrle expressed optimism about the impact of the fund, emphasizing the importance of re-opening businesses and revitalizing local economies. Detailed information about the fund and other resources will be made available in the upcoming week.

As of the latest update, FEMA has approved $1.5 million in disaster grants to households, providing much-needed financial relief to affected families. Over 330 FEMA workers have been deployed to the affected regions, and an impressive number of 1,971 households have already submitted their applications for assistance.

Moreover, the inclusion of Caledonia and Orange Counties in the disaster declaration now allows residents in those areas to apply for disaster grants. Previously, Chittenden, Lamoille, Rutland, Washington, Windham, and Windsor counties were approved, and FEMA officials are actively considering additional counties, with announcements to be made soon.

Governor Scott emphasized the critical role of Vermonters in reporting their damages to Vermont 211. Reporting damage not only helps individuals seek assistance but also aids other counties in qualifying for disaster aid. Every report contributes to the assessment of eligibility, ensuring that the necessary support reaches those in need.

Understanding the urgency of immediate financial support for municipalities, the Treasurer’s Office is taking proactive steps. They are releasing $11 million in already owed state payments to 40 of Vermont’s hardest-hit towns ahead of schedule. This measure ensures that municipalities have access to funds promptly while waiting for FEMA reimbursements.

In the spirit of fostering a sense of security for Vermonters, state officials have made arrangements to keep shelters open for those who need a place to stay. Vermont State University’s Johnson campus and the Barre auditorium will remain accessible as shelters, with 11 other locations on standby to lend assistance if required.

As Vermont continues its journey toward recovery, the combined efforts of its resilient community, along with the unwavering support from federal and state agencies, promise to rebuild and emerge even stronger from the aftermath of the devastating floods. Together, we stand united in the pursuit of a brighter future.
