Clarification: Solar Panels Are Subsidized Through Tax Credits, Not Given For Free By The Government
The Assertion: A Free Solar Panel Installation Program Exists Under Government Authority. On March 22nd, a video was shared on Facebook featuring an individual discussing the topic of solar energy. “Are you aware of the U.S. solar companies’ national secret?” the man poses to his audience. “It appears they are obliged to provide solar panels at absolutely zero net cost upon request.” The man subsequently claims that this provision is part of a new federal solar incentive program.
In addition to the video, the post included a link to a website advertising a discounted service for the installation of solar panels.
Within less than a fortnight, the video had gained over 200 likes. Similar content has been disseminated on Facebook.
Evaluation: False
Contrary to this claim, an expert from the Department of Energy has confirmed that no such program exists. However, the government does provide a federal tax credit, which covers a portion of the cost of solar panels.
Refuting the Myth: There is no Free Solar Panel Installation Government Program
Becca Jones-Albertus, the director of the Solar Energy Technologies Office within the Department of Energy, communicated to USA TODAY via email that the government is not supplying solar panels for free.
In a blog post published on March 10, Jones-Albertus provides guidance to potential buyers on how to evade online scams. “Some states subsidize solar energy for households that meet certain income qualifications, but always ensure that the program is detailed on a .gov website or contact the state office to verify the offer’s legitimacy and learn how to partake,” the blog post advises.
The government, though not supplying free solar panels, does offer a tax credit for individuals using solar power on residential property. This credit was amplified and extended to 2034 by the Inflation Reduction Act.
Solar systems installed during the years 2020 and 2021 are eligible for a 26% tax credit. Systems installed between 2022 and 2032 qualify for a 30% tax credit.
Fact check: Human activities cause global warming, not solar winds or a weakened magnetic field
A few posts claim that the Inflation Reduction Act allows American residents in different states to receive $2,500, a Tesla power bank, and free solar panel installation. The act, however, does not include such a program.
According to Forbes, companies that advertise “free” solar panels usually offer solar panel leasing agreements. These involve monthly lease and electricity usage fees instead of a one-time upfront payment.
USA TODAY had earlier debunked a claim suggesting the government was giving out $8,400 for individuals to test solar panels. USA TODAY has contacted the user who shared the post for comment.
