President Renfroe Speaks Out on DeSantis’ Forceful Remarks Targeting Federal Workers
In recent times, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) has played a critical role in American society, especially during the pandemic. They have not only been responsible for delivering essential items to households but have also been instrumental in ensuring that stimulus checks reached millions of Americans, providing financial relief in a time of uncertainty.
This significant contribution was brought to the forefront amidst a political firestorm last week. Florida Governor and presidential candidate, Ron DeSantis, caused alarm and outrage at a campaign event in New Hampshire when he declared about federal employees, “We are going to start slitting throats on Day One,” intending to fight against the so-called “deep state.”
In response to these inflammatory comments, NALC President Brian L. Renfroe did not hold back. He issued a stern statement, calling Gov. DeSantis’ violent rhetoric:
“Appalling, shocking, disturbing, and a cause for alarm for every single American. The members of NALC, along with all federal employees, have dedicated their lives to public service and must not be subject to violent threats and assaults, especially from those in positions of power.”
Renfroe’s words highlighted the vulnerability and valor of letter carriers, who have been voted the most trusted federal employees in various public surveys for several consecutive years. Despite their commitment, they face an alarming increase in violent attacks.
“Every day, our members dutifully perform their jobs, delivering paychecks, medications, ballots, and other essential mail, only to be targeted in communities across the country,” Renfroe said, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
During the challenging times of the pandemic, letter carriers were at the forefront, connecting the nation and delivering household items so that Americans could safely stay at home. With the increased delivery of packages and stimulus checks, they became targets for violent criminals, a trend that continues to grow.
Renfroe cited examples of this dangerous trend, including a letter carrier shot in Chicago and others robbed in San Francisco and Toledo, OH. He mourned the loss of Brother Aundre Cross, killed while delivering mail in Milwaukee.
“These are not isolated incidents. They are happening nationwide in communities everywhere,” he warned.
In light of these ongoing threats, the NALC calls for prioritized prosecution of crimes against federal employees, underscoring the need to convey a strong message that such crimes are intolerable.
Renfroe found it unimaginable that a governor with presidential ambitions would advocate violence against public servants. He reminded DeSantis of the federal implications of such actions, stating, “His harmful threats of violence are criminal and have no place in elected office or our society.”
Letter carriers, often considered the eyes and ears of the community, go above and beyond in their roles. Renfroe shared a story of a letter carrier interrupting a violent assault in Virginia, exemplifying the heroism they often display.
Finally, Renfroe’s statement culminated in a call to action, demanding Gov. DeSantis to retract his statement and apologize to over 280,000 city letter carriers represented by NALC, as well as millions of other federal public servants.
“Gov. DeSantis’ harsh threats are out of line and should not be overlooked,” he concluded.
This incident underscores the essential role letter carriers play in our society, particularly during trying times. The public outcry against Gov. DeSantis’ words serves as a sobering reminder of the respect and protection that these public servants deserve. The NALC’s robust response stands as a testament to their commitment to their members and the principles of decency, respect, and the rule of law.
