Restore Louisiana Program Extends Application Deadline for Applicants
The Restore Louisiana Homeowner Assistance Program has decided to extend the application deadline, providing homeowners with more time to seek assistance. This extension, now scheduled until Tuesday, October 31, aims to accommodate approximately 6,500 homeowners who have completed the initial survey but have yet to submit their applications.
The Restore Louisiana program, designed to offer federal grant assistance to homeowners affected by disasters between 2020 and 2021, has taken this step to address concerns regarding federal recovery timelines. Homeowners who fail to submit their applications before the new October 31 deadline and do not have a damage assessment completed by the end of 2023 may experience delays in the reimbursement processing.
One recipient of this program, Hamilton Guillory, expressed his gratitude for the assistance. Guillory, like nearly 5,000 eligible homeowners, received federal funding through the program. After losing everything in Hurricane Laura, he was finally able to move into his brand new home just two weeks ago.
Pat Forbes, the executive director of the Louisiana Office of Community Development, stressed the importance of prompt action, stating, “Our goal is to administer as much recovery assistance as possible to Louisiana homeowners, so we encourage them to act now.”
To emphasize the program’s dedication to resilient construction, Mayor Nic Hunter and others toured a home built to a higher standard than the state’s building codes require. This program-managed “Solution 1” reconstruction includes features like doors and windows rated for 150-mile-an-hour winds, roofs with double moisture protection, and reinforced structures with steel, ensuring that the building remains intact even during severe storms.
