Rural Kansas Homeowners to Benefit from USDA's Home Repair Grants

Topeka, Kansas – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has recently declared the availability of grants geared towards aiding rural Kansans in repairing homes damaged by snowstorms or wildfires that occurred in 2022.

The USDA has specified that the homes eligible for these grants must be located within areas that have been officially declared as disaster zones by the President. This funding opportunity extends to residents living across 22 counties within Kansas.

Christy Davis, USDA Rural Development Kansas State Director, shared her thoughts on the matter, stating, “When an unexpected crisis impacts our lives, it reminds us of our connection to our communities and to the places we call home.” She further emphasized the commitment of the USDA in assisting rural Kansans to access the resources necessary to rebuild their homes, communities, and lives.

The grants are being dispensed through the Rural Disaster Home Repair Grant Program, a supplemental disaster funding initiative of the USDA. Through this program, individuals may apply to receive grants reaching up to $40,675 directly from the USDA, aimed at facilitating the repair of their homes.

The funding will remain available until it has been fully expended. The grants can be utilized for a range of purposes, including covering the cost of home repair expenses resulting from a presidentially declared disaster that took place in the calendar year 2022, preparing a site for a manufactured home, or relocating a manufactured home.

Eligibility criteria stipulate that applicants must have household incomes that do not exceed the low limits based on their household size and county. Furthermore, homes must be located within an eligible rural area, as well as within the boundaries of a presidentially declared disaster area of 2022.

The USDA has listed the following Kansas counties as potentially eligible for the funding: Barton, Clark, Comanche, Edwards, Ellis, Ford, Graham, Gray, Harvey, Hodgeman, Kiowa, Lane, Meade, Ness, Pawnee, Phillips, Reno, Rooks, Rush, Stafford, Trego, and Wallace.

For further details on how to apply, the USDA has invited potential applicants to reach out via email at [email protected].

This additional funding will not only aid eligible organizations in helping rural individuals repair and improve their homes, but it will also assist rural communities in repairing water infrastructure and essential community facilities.

The USDA has also provided a resourceful link for rural communities seeking disaster assistance, which can be accessed at https://www.rd.usda.gov/page/rural-development-disaster-assistance.
