Following Governor Brian Kemp’s signing of an adjusted budget, homeowners in Georgia are set to receive a $500 property tax rebate.
On Friday, the Republican governor gave his approval to House Bill 18. This bill marks a substantial increase in state expenditure, amounting to an additional $2.4 billion that will be spent by the end of the fiscal year on June 30.
Legislation Enabling Tax Rebate Under the umbrella of a hefty $950 million property tax rebate scheme, taxpayers who have qualified for homestead exemptions can look forward to receiving an average of $500 from the state. Furthermore, the newly adjusted budget has allocated $1 billion, allowing citizens to secure up to $500 in tax refunds for a consecutive year.
The state Senate has scheduled discussions for Tuesday to authorize the refunds under House Bill 162. If passed, this legislation will enable refunds of $250 for single filers and $500 for those filing jointly.
During a speech at the state Capitol on Monday, Governor Kemp stated that the measures he was implementing fulfilled promises he made throughout his reelection campaign.
Expanded Budget Allocations The revised budget extends its focus beyond tax rebates and includes funds for various other key areas. This includes grants for school security, a reinsurance scheme, the training of nurses, and the provision of funds for retirees.
One noteworthy allocation in the updated budget is the one-time $500 awards for 54,000 pensioners under the state Workers’ Retirement System. This initiative provides much-needed financial relief for retirees in Georgia.
In a bid to bolster school security, the budget allocates $115 million for school security grants. This significant sum equates to nearly $50,000 per school. Additionally, the state reinsurance program, designed to reduce healthcare costs, is set to receive a considerable $92 million.
The budget also provides for the enhancement of the state’s healthcare sector by including $3.5 million for nurse training. Furthermore, an additional $5 million is allocated to assist paraprofessionals in their journey to becoming certified teachers, further strengthening the education sector.
