Stimulus Checks in 2023: A List of States Still Sending Payments

Stimulus checks, which once dominated headlines during the height of the pandemic in 2020, have continued to provide relief for many Americans facing economic hardship. Though most federal aid has wound down, some states have taken the initiative to offer additional financial support in the form of property or income tax reimbursements. Here’s a closer look at the stimulus-like measures in different states.

Idaho

In the Gem State, approximately 800,000 rebates are planned, totaling up to $500 million. Known as Special Session Rebate checks, these range from $300 for individual state tax filers to $600 for joint-filing families. To qualify, recipients must have lived in Idaho throughout 2020 and 2021. This state-led effort aims to ease the financial burdens on families, especially those hardest hit by the pandemic’s economic impact.

Illinois

Illinois has targeted six million residents to receive income and property tax rebates, with payments having started last September. Maximum property tax rebates are $300, while income tax rebates vary. Singles might receive $50, couples $100, and families with dependents could receive up to $300. This broad-reaching program is designed to provide direct relief to taxpayers at various income levels.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts has embarked on an extensive rebate program, with about three million taxpayers benefiting from nearly $2.9 billion in tax rebates. These funds equate to around 13% of a resident’s 2021 state income. The Bay State’s plan has already seen most taxpayers receive these funds, providing significant relief and injecting money back into the local economy.

Montana

Montana’s homeowners have an opportunity to receive property tax rebate checks of up to $1,350 over two years. Eligibility criteria include living in or owning a Montana residence for at least seven months in the previous year and having paid property taxes on that property. Homeowners can apply for rebates starting August 15 through getmyrebate.mt.gov. All claims must be submitted by October 1. This initiative supports homeowners in a state where property values and associated taxes have been on the rise.

Nuevo Mexico

In the Land of Enchantment, around 26,000 low-income residents have received “economic relief” payments of $500 or $1,000, as part of a $15 million program to allocate state surplus funds. Additionally, separate income tax rebates were sent to nearly one million residents who filed 2021 tax returns. Ranging from $500 to $1,000, these checks were sent out in late June. Any resident who hasn’t yet filed a 2021 tax return has until May 31, 2024, to do so and claim the rebate check. These measures aim to uplift the most financially vulnerable residents in the state.

Several states have leveraged surplus budgets or pandemic relief funds to provide essential financial support to their residents. From property tax rebates to income tax refunds, these programs reflect a concerted effort to aid recovery and bolster economic stability. While they may not be labeled as “stimulus checks” in the traditional sense, these state-sponsored initiatives serve a similar purpose, helping citizens navigate the continuing economic challenges. The deadlines and application procedures vary by state, and residents are encouraged to review their state’s specific requirements and take advantage of these valuable resources.
