Texas Welcomes bp's New Solar Initiative as Construction Commences

HOUSTON – In a significant move bolstering the global shift towards more sustainable energy sources, bp has officially commenced construction on its Peacock Solar project. Located a mere 10 miles north of Corpus Christi in San Patricio County, Texas, the impressive 187MWdc facility is set to play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions.

Set to be a game-changer in renewable energy, Peacock Solar has inked a long-term power purchase agreement with Gulf Coast Growth Ventures (GCGV), a synergistic partnership between industry giants ExxonMobil and SABIC. The joint venture focuses on producing a myriad of materials crucial to everyday life, including clothing fabric, food containers, agricultural films, packaging materials, and construction essentials.

Uniquely situated in close proximity to the GCGV production complex, Peacock will channel its generated power directly into the facility. Once fully operational, the solar project is expected to churn out enough renewable energy annually to supply electricity to an astounding 34,000 households. This isn’t just about energy; it’s about fostering a sustainable lifestyle for communities.

Beyond environmental benefits, the Peacock project is slated to be an economic windfall for the region. An estimated 300 jobs are expected to be created during the construction phase alone. Furthermore, the project will contribute more than $25 million in tax revenue during its initial quarter-century of operation, offering substantial financial benefits to local communities.

Dave Lawler, bp America’s chairman and president, remarked, “Initiating the construction of the Peacock Solar project not only marks a pivotal moment in lowering carbon energy but also brings a plethora of advantages to local communities and the broader economy. This project is a shining example of how bp is steadfastly growing its solar generation capacity in the U.S., investing in America’s future, and furthering our evolution into a fully integrated energy company.”

This Texas-based solar installation exemplifies bp’s ongoing commitment to green energy initiatives, and serves as a cornerstone in the company’s broader strategy to invest in America’s renewable energy future.
