Veterans Outreach Court: Supporting Low-Income Veterans with Legal and Financial Matters

TAMPA, Fla. — In Tampa, local veterans facing financial and legal challenges are finding essential support through the Veterans Outreach Court. Now in its seventh year, this vital program has returned to James A. Haley Veterans Hospital, providing invaluable assistance to those who have served their country.

For Navy veteran James Broner, a simple act like sitting in a barber’s chair holds special significance. He remembers missing the event last year, and this time, he was determined not to miss it. The annual Veterans Outreach Court offers much more than haircuts; it provides low-income veterans with a swift and effective means of addressing legal concerns.

Broner, a regular attendee of the event, expressed his appreciation for the court and its judge, emphasizing the importance of their annual interactions. He hopes not to return in similar circumstances but appreciates the support provided by the court.

The Veterans Outreach Court focuses on helping veterans resolve minor cases, including traffic violations and challenging fines that have become burdensome to pay. For individuals like Broner, this assistance can make a significant difference in their lives.

The event doesn’t stop at legal matters; it also offers other essential services, such as assistance with property issues and home-related concerns. Broner, facing a plumbing problem, recognizes the value of these additional services.

The government agencies involved in the program extend their support to address various issues that veterans might encounter. The common thread among all the services offered is the importance of veterans taking the first step and showing up to seek assistance.

Broner’s message to his fellow veterans is clear: “Get involved and being here – that’s a big deal.” He emphasizes that active participation and seeking help are crucial steps toward accessing the valuable support available to them.

Since its inception in 2016, the Veterans Outreach Court has made a remarkable impact, helping over 200 veterans. It has waived more than $200,000 in fines and successfully resolved over 900 cases. The program continues to play a pivotal role in providing financial and legal relief to those who have served their country, ensuring they receive the support they deserve.
