Energy Conservation Goals
The City of Fort Worth adopted a goal to reduce its electricity consumption by 5% each fiscal year for 10 years beginning in 2011 in reaction to Texas S.B. 898, which required political subdivisions in non attainment areas of the federal Clean Air Act standards to establish such a goal. Under the provisions of S.B. 898, Fort Worth will file an annual energy consumption goal compliance report with the State Energy Conservation Office.
Municipal Building Policies
The Fort Worth City Council appointed a Sustainability Task Force to investigate ways to ensure city infrastructure and resources can keep pace with growth. The Task Force created an action plan that details sustainability initiatives it seeks to advance, including:
- Adopt a policy requiring new City buildings to be LEED Silver or better certified when the certification cost does not exceed 5% of the construction cost;
- Promote use of alternative energy sources;
- Obtain LEED EB Silver certification or better on major renovations when the cost of certification does not exceed 5% of the construction cost;
- Install cool or green roof at City facilities as they are renovated; and
- Purchase a percentage of the City’s power from renewable energy source.
The EPA ranked Dallas/Fort Worth as 7th in their 2014 "Top 25 cities with the most ENERGY STAR certified buildings".
