In February, 2007, Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman announced that state buildings located in Marion County, which encompasses Indianapolis, will purchase 10% of their energy from renewable energy resources by 2010. The schedule for the commitment is as follows:
7% in 2007
8% in 2008
9% in 2009
10% in 2010
Additionally, the state Strategic Energy Plan released in 2006 calls for increasing the percentage to 25% by 2025. Eligible renewable energy sources include wind, solar, geothermal, and biomass technologies.
The state is working with Indianapolis Power & Light (IPL) to purchase in-state renewable energy credits (RECs) through the utility’s Green Power Option program. As of March, 2007, IPL was purchasing 8,450 megawatt-hours of RECs on behalf of state facilities from landfill gas facilities owned by the Wabash Valley Power Association at a cost of $16,140.
