JEA created a net-metering program in 2003 for residential customers with photovoltaic (PV) systems and wind turbines up to 10 kilowatts (kW) in capacity. Systems must be installed in accordance with the guidelines of the utility’s engineering standards, including DPE-902, which requires equipment to protect JEA personnel working on circuits where residential PV systems may be grid-tied. JEA uses a bi-directional meter to achieve net metering. At this time, JEA does not offer net metering for commercial installations.

Customers receive credit at the utility’s full retail rate for electricity generated by eligible systems. Customers with net excess generation (NEG) only pay the utility’s basic charge for service, and the excess is carried forward as a kilowatt-hour (kWh) credit to the customer’s following monthly bill. There is no limit on overall enrollment in JEA’s net-metering program.

As of November 2008, JEA is in the process of revising their net-metering program. Check the utility’s web site to verify terms of the current program.
