Schools can apply to receive rebates on photovoltaic systems under the Florida Solar Energy Center’s Solar for Schools program. Eligible schools will receive approximately $5/watt for systems up to four kilowatts, with a maximum rebate of $20,000. Some schools may receive an additional $1/watt for battery back-up systems to be used in case of emergencies or disasters.
Public or private K-12 schools, community colleges, universities and vocational schools with Internet access and an appropriate roof or ground location for the installation of a PV system may apply for rebate funds. Schools can team up with their local electric utility, organizations within the local community, commercial and residential customers, or corporate sponsors to raise the additional funds for each system. Multiple party partnerships are strongly encouraged.
FSEC will install equipment that monitors PV systems installed on schools. Schools are encouraged to incorporate studies of the systems into science and math classes. In addition, FSEC will hold workshops and provide solar curriculum kits for teachers. PV demonstration kits will be available for approximately $250 each.
FSEC will accept applications until June 1, 2003, or until all funds have been exhausted.
