In January 2006, Rhode Island’s governor established a goal for the state government to buy 15% of its electricity from renewable-energy resources by 2016. In September 2006, the goal was accelerated to 20% by 2011. The Office of the Governor anticipates that qualifying electricity will be generated by wind turbines and hydropower facilities.
