Texas Homeowner Assistance Program Exceeds $50 Million in Housing Expense Payments
In a press release last month, the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) announced that it has awarded over $50 million to 7,000 struggling families in Texas. And these numbers have grown ever since. According to the program’s official dashboard, $75,177,994.00 have been paid so far to 9,435 households. The average assistance amount is $7,966.00 per household.
“I’ve had a pretty rough couple of years, and I am grateful to get some help that I desperately needed to stay in my home,” Vicki Drake, Angelina County homeowner said. “The Texas Homeowner Assistance application was very straightforward, and I even got a call from an agent who helped me upload the required documents. I’ve already recommended the program to several people.”
The Texas Homeowner Assistance Program offers up to $25,000.00 toward property taxes, property insurance, and HOA dues, as well as up to $40,000.00 against past-due mortgage payments. Homeowners receive these funds through their service providers, taxing authorities, or insurance companies rather than directly from them. The principal residence must be the applicant’s primary residence, and they must be at least one payment behind. The pandemics must have caused their financial difficulties, such as job loss, a work cut, or medical bills. They also need to demonstrate that they could make future payments.
“We encourage Texas homeowners in need of assistance to take advantage of this opportunity,” explained Bobby Wilkinson, TDHCA’s executive director. “We know many Texans were affected financially by the pandemic, and we’re doing our utmost to get them back on stable financial ground.”
