Federal Relief Program for Struggling Homeowners in Wyoming

Financial Relief from Wyoming Homeowner Assistance Fund program

The Department of Family Services recently launched the Wyoming Homeowner Assistance Fund program (HAF) which provides homeowners with grants of up to $17,000.00.  Applications opened on May 2, 2022, and they are available online. These funds can be used to cover housing-related expenses as a result of Covid-19 such as mortgage payments, insurance, association fees, and property taxes.

According to Corrine Livers, economic security programs administrator for the Department of Family Services, the program had distributed $219,000.00 to help 30 Wyoming families with late mortgage payments and $4,500.00 for late utilities. These $219,000.00 are an addition to the $2 million provided by the Homeowner Assistance Fund’s pilot program which helped a total of 168 households.

“We’ve really had great feedback from the families that have participated in it,” Livers said. “And I say that with the understanding that we haven’t had a whole lot of volume.”

The time it takes for mortgage assistance applications to be granted and paid out will be heavily influenced by the lenders, according to Livers. The Department of Family Services must confirm application information with the lenders, which can take a long time.

“Nationally, we find that some of the bigger mortgage companies are taking longer to return the needed information,” Livers said. That hasn’t been a problem so far, though, she said.

Before their applications for funding are granted, homeowners who are more than $17,000.00 behind on their mortgage or who are unable to pay it must also get a housing education. Applicants will be referred to one of two housing nonprofit organizations for assistance: Wyoming Housing Network or My Front Door.

The Department of Family Services also administers Wyoming’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program  (ERAP), which helps people who are having trouble paying their rent and utility payments. Unpaid bills must date from March 13, 2020, or later. A maximum of 18 months of support is available per qualified household.
