PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) and Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) have announced an exciting $50 million revitalization grant for the Hill District and Bedford Dwellings, signaling a transformative era for these communities.

This substantial grant is earmarked to restore affordable housing in the Bedford Dwellings and strategically invest in creating a neighborhood that boasts excellent connectivity to public transportation, fostering accessibility and convenience for residents.

“Housing is more than just a roof over your head; it’s the place where safety, well-being, and community start. As the foundation of a neighborhood, housing determines whether businesses can thrive, the potential of future economic development, and the sense of community residents feel,” emphasized Senator Casey.

Senator Casey also praised the dedication and perseverance of community leaders in the Hill District, who have tirelessly worked to envision a reimagined Bedford Dwellings—a neighborhood anchor that fosters vibrant and safe living environments, where residents can live, work, and play seamlessly.

The funding for this significant revitalization endeavor has been secured from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Choice Neighborhood Implementation Grant Program. The Housing Authority of Pittsburgh will be the recipient of this transformative grant, overseeing its effective utilization to uplift the Hill District and Bedford Dwellings to new heights of prosperity and growth.

“Housing is a human right, and this massive investment will help create more affordable housing in Pittsburgh and improve the conditions of this complex and neighborhood,” Senator Fetterman passionately affirmed. “As a member of the Senate Committee on Banking, which covers housing issues, I’ll always fight to make sure every Pennsylvanian has access to safe and affordable housing.”

Senator Fetterman’s strong advocacy for affordable housing emphasizes the critical importance of providing accessible and safe homes for every resident in Pittsburgh. This $50 million revitalization grant for the Hill District and Bedford Dwellings aligns perfectly with his vision of empowering communities and enhancing living conditions for all.

In late 2022, a promising development further bolstered this revitalization endeavor. The Housing Authority of Pittsburgh was informed of its eligibility to receive an additional $31 million in investments, courtesy of Pittsburgh City Council. This substantial contribution, contingent upon securing the HUD grant, demonstrates the city’s commitment to the success of this transformative project.

The combined investment of $81 million showcases an unwavering dedication to improving the lives of residents in the Hill District and Bedford Dwellings. With the support of Senator Fetterman and the strong collaboration between federal and local authorities, these communities are set to witness a profound positive change—a change that will pave the way for equitable and thriving neighborhoods. Together, they are rewriting the future of affordable housing in Pittsburgh, ensuring that it becomes a beacon of inclusivity and prosperity for all Pennsylvanians.
