Over $371K in LEAF Grants Distributed by North Elba

LAKE PLACID — In a significant move to support local initiatives, the Town of North Elba officials in New York announced on Friday that they are awarding over $371,000 in grants to various local organizations. This funding, sourced from the North Elba Local Enhancement and Advancement Fund (LEAF), will be allocated to a diverse range of projects as part of Round 6, which was approved at Tuesday’s Town Council meeting.

A total of 12 projects have been selected to receive these grants, benefiting a wide array of local entities. Among the recipients are the Adirondack Carousel, Adirondack Mountain Club, Lake Placid Central School District, and Shipman Youth Center. These organizations represent a cross-section of the community’s vibrant and diverse interests, from educational and cultural initiatives to environmental and recreational activities.

The process of selecting these projects was meticulous and thorough. The criteria for considering an organization’s funding request included a detailed evaluation of the organization itself, the plans for the proposed project or equipment purchase, the budget, and, importantly, how the proposed project would benefit the local communities, residents, and visitors to the area. This comprehensive approach ensured that the funds would be used effectively and have a meaningful impact on the community.

The 10-person LEAF committee, comprising representatives from local businesses and organizations, played a crucial role in this process. They meticulously reviewed each grant submission and presented their recommendations to the North Elba Town Council, which then made the final approval decisions.

The projects supported in this round of funding cover a broad spectrum of needs and interests. Many are focused on health and safety, such as the purchase of safety gear for young aspiring speed skaters and the provision of portable emergency equipment for local events. Additionally, the funding will support mental health-based first aid training and enhanced training for local first responders, further strengthening the community’s health and safety infrastructure.

Environmental sustainability and local attraction support are also key focuses of this funding round. Projects include energy efficiency initiatives at the Saranac Lake Civic Center, activities related to the Adirondack Rail Trail trailhead, and the acquisition of snowmaking equipment at Mount Pisgah Recreation Center. These projects not only contribute to environmental conservation but also enhance the area’s appeal as a destination for visitors and locals alike.

In summary, the Town of North Elba’s decision to award over $371,000 through the LEAF program represents a significant investment in the community’s well-being and development. By supporting a diverse range of projects, from health and safety initiatives to environmental sustainability and local attractions, North Elba is demonstrating a strong commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its residents and visitors, while also promoting the area’s unique cultural and natural assets.
