Summit County, Colorado residents and businesses have the opportunity to receive rebates of up to $1,950 for solar panel installations this year. The Solarize Summit program, a local initiative aimed at promoting solar energy, is spearheaded by two climate-oriented groups, the High Country Conservation Center and the Summit Climate Action Collaborative.

Through the program, customers who purchase solar panels from Active Energies Solar, LLC, the program’s sole installer based in Eagle County, can receive a $300 rebate from the company. Additionally, Breckenridge and unincorporated Summit County residents are eligible for up to $1,650 in local government rebates, while Frisco residents can receive up to $1,500. Further rebates are available for Summit County residents through the Energy Smart Colorado program, regardless of where they live.

The Inflation Reduction Act passed in 2022 has expanded the federal tax credit for solar installations, allowing residents to receive a 30% rebate on solar panel installation costs. Jessie Burley, the Town of Breckenridge’s sustainability manager, stated that the town’s goal of being powered by 100% renewable electricity by 2035 necessitates aggressive pursuit of incentives for home and business owners to switch to solar energy. Burley believes that these incentives, coupled with community support, provide an unprecedented opportunity for residents to switch to solar.

Since 2019, almost 200 homeowners across Summit County have participated in the Solarize Summit program, installing 1.5 megawatts of solar on their homes. The conservation center estimates that electricity use contributes to 32% of overall greenhouse gas emissions in the county.

To be eligible for a rebate through the Solarize Summit program, participants must sign up for a free solar site assessment before May 31. This initiative provides an excellent opportunity for Summit County residents to invest in renewable energy, reduce their carbon footprint, and save money on electricity costs.
