Trinidad and Tobago Home Improvement Grant Programme
The Home Improvement Grant Programme (HIG) is a component of the government’s comprehensive housing strategy. Under this program, the Ministry provides qualified applicants with up to $15,000.00 toward authorized repair and improvement projects. These funds can be used to cover: roof repairs, ceiling repairs, plumbing system repair and installation, replacement of damaged floors, doors, cupboards, and windows, improving facilities for persons with disabilities, and more. This year, 25 people have received assistance from this program.
“During these difficult times, we must make every effort to assist homeowners while we stimulate the housing market so everyone can benefit… This grant is from the government and will obviously not solve all of our problems but it will certainly help homeowners to effect critical repairs and upgrades to their homes,” said Minister in the Ministry of Housing Adrian Leonce.
To be eligible, applicants must be over 21 years, residents of Trinidad and Tobago, and have a monthly household income that does not exceed $5,000.00. Applicants are considered ineligible if they have previously applied to a similar program by the Ministry.
“When a home is in need of repair and homeowners can’t afford it the homeowner can be left with a feeling of entrapment and anxiety…Through this grant we are taking immediate action to relieve homeowners,” Minister in the Ministry of Housing Adrian Leonce said.
The applications are entered into the Ministry’s database and recipients are selected randomly. The next step is an assessment interview to verify the information on the application. Throughout the procedure, a technical person from the Ministry will go to the applicant’s location to make sure the approved work is being carried out in line with an Agreement that has been duly signed. Funds are disbursed in two tranches, 50% on commencement and 50% when half of the repairs have been completed.
