In January 2007, the State of Illinois established a goal for state agencies to purchase 3% of their power from renewable sources by the end of 2007, 4% by the end of 2008, and 5% by the end of 2009. The state has a contract for renewable energy credits generated by wind turbines located in Illinois. In March 2007, Lt. Governor Pat Quinn invited cities and universities around Illinois to accept the “3-4-5 renewable energy challenge” and match the state’s green power commitment.
The 3-4-5 challenge updates former Governor George Ryan’s Executive Order Number 6 from 2002, which set a goal for state agencies to purchase at least 5% of the electricity from renewable sources by 2010, and at least 15% by 2020.
