Description

The Kentucky Division of Energy (KDOE) administers a small grant program to enable Kentucky companies to install technologies that demonstrate the use of biomass for energy. Biomass is defined as land and water vegetation, and wastes that contain significant amounts of vegetable matter. It includes forestry and agricultural crops and residues, forestry and food processing wastes, animal wastes, and municipal solid waste.

Recent biomass energy demonstration projects funded through KDOE include the following:

–Fueling stations for ethanol vehicles (Frankfort and Northern Kentucky)
–A study of landfill gas maximization (University of Kentucky)
–Wood waste conversion system (Shirel Lumber Company, Union County)
–Landfill gas conversion system (Outer Loop Landfill, Louisville)
–A sawdust-fired boiler (Red River Hardwoods, Powell County )
–Assistance with processing hard-to-recycle materials (Bluegrass Regional Recycling Center, Fayette County)
