Description
Note: The number of applications received for the Geothermal Residential Rebate Program now exceeds the available funding. Applications already received are being processed. Applications are still being accepted, but will only be processed in the event any current application is rejected during the approval process.
The Indiana Office of Energy and Defense Development (OED) offers single-family residential homeowners a rebate for installing closed-loop geothermal heat pumps in replacement of existing space-conditioning systems. The incentive is set at a flat rate of $1,500 per new system. Applicants must have a household income of $100,000 or less in order to be eligible for a rebate. A total of $250,000 is available for rebates beginning August 1, 2008 and the program will remain active until April 30, 2009 or until funds are exhausted. Applicants are also strongly encouraged to review additional incentives for which they might also qualify on the program website.
The rebate is only available for new equipment that replaces an existing space-conditioning system. The new system must be closed-loop and be Energy Star certified. Applying for the rebate is a two-step process. In the first step, the applicant contacts an installer, who submits a completed rebate application to the OED. If the application is approved, the applicant will be directed to proceed with construction. Applicants have 30 days after their application is approved to complete the installation and resubmit the completed paperwork to the OED. This paperwork is composed of the the application signed by both the homeowner and the installer, a W-9 income verification form, and a Direct Deposit form for the rebate. The homeowner is responsible for obtaining all building permits that apply to the new installation and the state Office of Energy Development (OED) reserves the right to inspect installations to ensure that all eligibility and installation conditions have been met.
Further information on the program, applications, and other geothermal heat pump incentives is available from the OED website listed at the top of this page.
