After doing a little Google-ing, reading and calling a few IRS attorneys, we found what we pretty much already knew and then a little more.
The first thing we learned is that if you owe taxes to the state or government, you should (at a minimum) keep in contact with them. Whether you have the money or not, just keep in contact with them. They can and will reach their hand into any of your accounts with anything of value and take it. No warning, no letter or phone call — just poof!
Gone: That’s the bad news. Here is the good news.
Good news is, you might not have to pay the bill if you can prove that you cannot afford to pay it, but that does not mean you should avoid paying what you owe. There are many programs and options and, yes, they still have their Forgiveness Program.
One last thing on taxes: Please remember that not filing is criminal, not paying is civil. Very different & important to know things. In other words, you won’t go to jail for not paying (very rarely has this ever happened) but you can go to jail for not filing.
Now credit cards? It’s not so much the same. If you cannot pay the bill then you should consider your options. Bankruptcy is one way. You do not have to talk to the debt collectors every day either. You can also tell them to stop calling. They can try to sue you in civil court. Some do, some don’t.
