August 2023 Stimulus Check Distribution: A Guide to the States Involved
In 2023, the economic turmoil spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic has somewhat settled, and federal stimulus payments distributed during the peak of the crisis now seem like distant memories. As the pandemic emergency has officially been declared over, federal assistance has ceased, but the financial challenges for many households remain.
Recognizing the ongoing needs of their residents, several states have stepped up, devising their own financial support measures in the form of tax rebates and state-issued stimulus programs.
State-Specific Relief Programs
While the majority of deadlines for state-issued stimulus payments have passed, a handful of states are either still distributing payments due to recent authorization or in the process of disbursing remaining funds. Here’s an overview of what’s happening:
Idaho
Idaho has been active in offering tax rebates and “Special Session Rebates” in March and September of 2022. Though the majority of 2022 rebate payments have been dispatched, the Idaho State Tax Commission continues to send out payments to eligible taxpayers as they file their returns.
Illinois
The Illinois Income Tax Rebate and Property Tax Rebate had a submission deadline of October 17, 2022. Most payments have been distributed, but the state Comptroller ensures that the distribution will persist until all eligible beneficiaries have their rebates.
Massachusetts
Beginning in November 2022, Massachusetts initiated paying state tax refunds, with most now completed. Those eligible received a 14.0312% refund of their 2021 Massachusetts state tax liability. However, unfiled 2021 returns can still claim the refund if filed by September 15, 2023.
Montana
Montana residents have the opportunity to receive a property tax rebate of up to $675 and/or an income tax rebate determined by their state tax liability. The process for individual income tax rebates began in July 2023 and will continue through December 31, 2023, in the order received.
New Mexico
In New Mexico, two rebates were introduced in 2023: one targeting taxpayers and the other focused on those not required to file tax returns. The income tax rebate consists of $1,000 for joint filers and $500 for single filers and married individuals filing separately.
State government’s efforts to provide financial support to their residents underscore the importance of continuing to assist households as they recover from the economic challenges of the pandemic. For those in Idaho, Illinois, Massachusetts, Montana, and New Mexico, there may still be opportunities to access these benefits.
Residents of these states are encouraged to consult their local tax agencies or professional tax advisors to understand their eligibility and ensure they are taking full advantage of the available support. This localized support system is a testament to the resilience and commitment of state governments to ensure the well-being of their citizens in the aftermath of unprecedented global challenges.
