Home for Children with Disabilities Receives Backyard Makeover at Zero Cost

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO — A heartwarming story unfolded as a home for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities received a free brand-new backyard makeover.

“It’s definitely a boost up for them,” expressed Donna Thurston, CEO of Roundup Fellowship. “It’s been a long time in need of some upgrades to the backyard. This new space will provide them with opportunities to grow, explore, and have fun in a safe environment.”

Today, more than 40 selfless volunteers from Home Depot assembled together to give a Roundup Fellowship group home the beautiful gift of a free backyard transformation. The group worked tirelessly, and when they were done, they thoughtfully left behind new tools to ensure that the yard stays in pristine condition.

This is one of the several group homes that nonprofit Roundup Fellowship owns, dedicated to nurturing the lives of children with disabilities. Currently, the home is taking care of 5 children, each with unique needs and challenges.

The journey to the backyard makeover began when Roundup Fellowship applied for a grant. The call was answered by Home Depot volunteers, who eagerly collaborated to turn the vision of a new backyard into reality. Thurston emphasized how this new space will greatly benefit the children’s development.

“You know, they love being outside, and they’ve been outside just kind of making up their own games in their own adventures out here with a little more structure,” explained Thurston. “Having a swing set, having some garden beds to grow some plants gives them an opportunity to learn how to grow things, how to play together, and foster a sense of community.”

The incredible feat was accomplished in just one day, a testament to the dedication and collaboration of Roundup Fellowship and the volunteers. They ensured everything was perfect and left behind new tools, symbolizing a commitment to the ongoing care of this haven for children.

“Having a space in their backyard where they can just play like any other kid would, that’s one of the greatest gifts we can give them,” Thurston affirmed. “It helps to create their independence and provides a constant reminder that they are valued and loved.”

Since 1973, the local non-profit Roundup Fellowship has been a beacon of support and services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This year, they are celebrating a remarkable 50 years of service, and this backyard makeover is yet another shining example of their unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives of those in their care.

This collaborative effort between Roundup Fellowship and Home Depot showcases the beautiful synergy that can be achieved when communities come together with a shared purpose. It’s not just a backyard; it’s a newfound space of joy, exploration, and empowerment for children who deserve every opportunity to thrive.
