MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — In a time where every penny counts, homeowners across Mecklenburg County are opening their mail only to find an unexpected and unwelcome surprise. Property values are on the rise, thanks to a comprehensive revaluation conducted by the county earlier this year.

Homeowners in Shock Over Rising Taxes

Local resident Katrina Williams was among those taken aback by the sudden increase. “I was already bracing for price hikes in groceries and other essentials, but this was an unanticipated wallop,” Williams said, whose annual property taxes nearly doubled this year.

What’s Driving the Surge?

According to the county assessor’s office, the region’s booming real estate market has led to a steep climb in property assessments. On average, residential properties in Mecklenburg County have seen a valuation increase of approximately 51%.

The Homes Program Steps Up

Amid this financial strain, the Homes Program is launching efforts to provide crucial relief to families at risk of losing their homes. Denise Syles-Ballard, who represents the initiative, explained, “The rising costs of homeownership are hitting hard; our program aims to offer some respite.”

More Assistance Available than Ever

Syles-Ballard went on to detail how the program now enables qualified residents to receive up to $660 in assistance—an increase from last year’s $330. “Applications are flooding in,” she said, “We’re seeing hundreds on a daily basis.”

A Call to Action

The urgency of the situation can’t be understated, and the Homes Program is encouraging all eligible residents to apply for aid. “Our goal is to help families like Katrina Williams and her 6-year-old son, Casey, maintain the stability and security of a home,” Syles-Ballard emphasized.
