Key Details on Property Tax Payments and Home Owner Grants

The City of Trail would like to bring to the attention of all property owners the crucial information about the upcoming property tax deadline. The due date for settling 2023 property tax payments has been established as Tuesday, July 4, 2023.

For those property owners who qualify for the Home Owner Grant (HOG), it is important to note that this grant must be claimed directly through the Province of British Columbia. This can be done either online or via phone. While claiming your HOG, remember to refer to Jurisdiction number 232. When entering your Roll No., avoid including the initial 0 (zero). Detailed instructions can be found both below and in the accompanying yellow document included with your property tax statements.

As for property tax payments, they can be made in several ways:

  1. You can pay online through your bank or credit union.
  2. Another online option is via the City’s payment system at www.trail.ca/PayOnline. Your account number corresponds to Roll No. present on your tax notice. We advise that you allow enough time for your online payment to be processed before the payment deadline of Tuesday, July 4, 2023.
  3. Payments can also be made in person at Trail City Hall, located at 1394 Pine Avenue. The office accepts cash, cheques, Interac, Visa, or Mastercard, from Monday through Friday, 9 AM – 3:30 PM. Please ensure that all payments made at the City Hall are completed by 3:30 PM on Tuesday, July 4, 2023.

If you have any queries regarding property tax, you can reach the City of Trail at 250-364-1262 or via email.

Regarding the Home Owner Grants, if you’re eligible, you must claim your HOG prior to making your property tax payment. Note that the HOG claim has to be made directly through the Province of British Columbia, and not the City of Trail. To avoid penalties and interest, make sure to claim your HOG before the tax due date of Tuesday, July 4, 2023. The methods to claim your HOG are:

  1. Online at www.gov.bc.ca/homeownergrant. Remember that the Jurisdiction number for Trail is 232 and exclude the initial 0 (zero) when entering your Roll No.
  2. Via phone at 1-888-355-2700 to speak with a live agent, Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Note that they are closed on statutory holidays.

For any queries regarding the Home Owner Grant, you can contact the Province of British Columbia at 1-888-355-2700.

Please be aware that a 10% penalty will be levied on any unpaid taxes and unclaimed Home Owner Grant amounts after the property tax due date of Tuesday, July 4, 2023.

You can also find this information in the yellow document included with your property tax statements.
