Support Available: Low-Income Homeowners Eligible for Property Tax Relief

New Hampshire Refinance Program

New Hampshire homeowners burdened by high property taxes can now find some respite through the state-run Low and Moderate Income Homeowners Property Tax Relief program. Administered by the New Hampshire Department of Revenue Administration, this program has been instrumental in providing financial relief to low-income homeowners across the state, distributing a staggering $47.5 million since its inception in 2002.

According to a recent report by ATTOM, a national property data surveyor, New Hampshire ranks among the top ten states in terms of property tax burden. Analyzing the effective property tax rate, which represents the average tax paid on a property’s value, reveals that New Hampshire’s rate for 2022 stands at 1.28 percent, securing its position as the seventh-highest rate in the nation.

To qualify for assistance, single homeowners must have an annual income of no more than $37,000, while households with dual incomes must stay below the $47,000 threshold. There is no prioritization of applications, and they are accepted on a rolling basis, ensuring that eligible homeowners have an opportunity to receive the support they need. Additionally, the program mandates that home values must not exceed $220,000, and applicants must have resided in their properties as of April 1, 2022.

Last year alone, nearly 6,000 households received a total of $1.4 million in tax relief, highlighting the program’s significant impact on the community. It’s worth noting that there is no cap on the relief amount provided, allowing homeowners to benefit from the program to the fullest extent possible.

To apply for the Low and Moderate Income Homeowners Property Tax Relief program, eligible homeowners have multiple options. They can electronically file a claim through the official website at www.revenue.nh.gov/gtc, download a paper form from www.revenue.nh.gov/forms/low-moderate.htm, request the form by calling (603) 230-5001, or email [email protected].
