Unlock $50K in Free Financing for Your Home Repairs from Great Barrington

BARRINGTON — Attention, homeowners in need! Great news has just landed for those grappling with costly home repairs. Thanks to Gov. Maura Healey’s administration, the town of Barrington is now flush with $1.35 million in Community Development Block Grant money. This grant aims to be a financial lifesaver for low- and moderate-income residents who find themselves sinking under the weight of expensive home fixes—think roofs, furnaces, and other big-ticket items.

Unveiled in a town statement on Tuesday, this massive funding infusion is a part of the Regional Housing Rehab program. But here’s the icing on the cake: Up to 24 lucky homeowners will be able to secure loans at a whopping zero percent interest, with deferred payment options available. Yes, you read that right—zero interest! And as if that’s not sweet enough, the loans will be completely forgiven if the homeowner commits to staying in the property for at least 15 years. Talk about a win-win!

What exactly can you do with this funding? The program covers a broad range of home repairs, from essential building code fixes to weatherization upgrades. And that’s not all—need to tackle lead paint abatement, improve handicap accessibility, or secure emergency funds for a leaky roof or a failed furnace? The program has got you covered.

Application for the program is on a “first-come/first-served” basis. But take note, priority will be laser-focused on repairs that address health and safety violations in your home, ensuring that the most crucial issues are tackled first.

Behind the scenes, the state’s Department of Housing and Community Development is overseeing the program. They’re working hand-in-hand with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to make sure the grant money is put to good use. This initiative is part of a larger state effort aimed at providing small towns and cities with the resources they need to support low- and moderate-income residents.

If history is any indicator, these funds are sure to be snatched up in a heartbeat. The program has seen an overwhelming number of applications in past funding rounds, including one in early 2020 that benefited both Great Barrington and Egremont. Households across Berkshire County have been reaping the benefits for years, and now it’s your chance to get in on the action. So, don’t waste any time—check if you’re eligible and apply now!
