Your Chance to Benefit: Homeowner Assistance Fund Program Expands Its Reach!
In a significant move to support homeowners in Hawaiʻi State, the Homeowner Assistance Fund (HAF) Program has announced a groundbreaking expansion of its eligibility criteria. Since its establishment in 2021, the program has been spearheaded by the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement and Hawaiʻi Community Lending, aiming to assist homeowners facing the most pressing financial challenges. With the adverse impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic affecting countless families, HAF has been a beacon of hope, offering vital mortgage assistance to those in need.
Dean Minakami, the interim executive director of HHFDC, expressed his enthusiasm about this pivotal step forward. He said, “This expansion marks a meaningful stride in supporting our community of homeowners who have been grappling with mortgage difficulties. The pandemic brought a myriad of challenges to homeowners, and we are determined to extend our helping hand even further, providing much-needed program benefits to those who require it.”
Effective immediately, the program has undergone four remarkable enhancements, signifying a significant boost to its capabilities. The maximum assistance amount per household has been raised from $30,000 to an impressive $60,000, providing a more substantial lifeline for those in financial distress. Moreover, forward (non-outstanding) payment mortgage assistance is now available for a duration of up to 12 months, doubling the previous assistance period of 6 months.
One of the most notable aspects of this expansion is that homeowners no longer have to be delinquent to qualify for assistance. This change recognizes the importance of proactive support for homeowners facing financial uncertainties, giving them the opportunity to access aid before their situation worsens. Additionally, reverse mortgage homeowners are now eligible to benefit from the program, ensuring that a wider spectrum of homeowners can find the help they need.
The geographical reach of the Homeowner Assistance Fund Program has also broadened significantly. It is now accessible in Kauaʻi and Hawaiʻi counties, in addition to its availability on Oʻahu. This expansion will undoubtedly touch the lives of many more individuals and families throughout the Hawaiian Islands, fostering stability and hope for a brighter future.
