Hands holding tools over a house

The city of Mobile is extending a helping hand to its residents by offering home repair grants. These grants aim to address critical repair needs, ensuring that homes are safe and habitable. This initiative, supported by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), is a part of the Community Development Block Grant program. Here’s everything you need to know about applying for these grants.

Home Repair Grants: An Overview

The city’s Critical Repair Grant Program is designed to assist homeowners with essential repairs that improve the safety and functionality of their homes. Eligible repairs include exterior roofing replacement, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems. These grants are not intended for cosmetic upgrades but rather for necessary improvements that address health and safety concerns.

Eligibility Criteria for Applicants

To qualify for the Critical Repair Grant Program, applicants must meet several criteria:

  1. Residency: Applicants must live within the city limits of Mobile.
  2. Homeownership: Applicants must own only one home and provide proof of ownership, such as a deed, tax record, or tax receipt.
  3. Occupancy: The home must be the primary residence of the applicant, with proof of occupancy required. This can be demonstrated by providing a current power bill, water bill for 2024, and a valid driver’s license.
  4. Income Verification: Applicants must qualify as low-income and provide proof of income for all household residents. Acceptable documents include Social Security award letters, paycheck stubs for the past two months, or retirement and pension statements.
  5. Bank Statements: Copies of the last two months’ bank statements for anyone over 18 living in the home must be provided. For those receiving payments on a pay card or Direct Express Debit Card, statements for January and February 2024 are required.

How to Apply for Home Repair Grants

Applications for the home repair grants are accepted Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., starting April 1, 2024. Applicants are advised to bring copies of all required documents to submit with their application, as originals will not be accepted.

Applications must be submitted in person at one of the following locations:

  • Levon C. Manzie Neighborhood Resource Center: 110 N. Lafayette St., Mobile, AL 36604
  • Government Plaza – 5th Floor South Tower: 205 Government Street, Mobile, AL 36602

The program operates on a need-based system rather than a first-come-first-serve basis. This means that applications will be assessed and prioritized based on a pre-determined need system. The processing time for applications can range from 4-8 weeks, depending on the volume of submissions.

Important Points to Remember

The application process is thorough, and applicants should ensure all required documents are included to avoid delays. If you do not hear back within one year of applying, you are encouraged to reapply in the next cycle.
