See if You’re Eligible for Free or Discounted Home Internet Access
Internet connection is one of the many issues that low-income families encounter when it comes to paying their bills. That’s why the White House released a fact sheet about the federal Affordable Connectivity Program, which may be able to assist.
“From large providers like AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon serving dozens of states,” the White House notes, “to smaller providers serving rural areas like Jackson Energy Authority in Tennessee and Comporium in North Carolina, the commitments will allow tens of millions of ACP-eligible households to receive high-speed internet at no cost.”
The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) offers a monthly discount of up to $30.00 per eligible home for internet access or up to $75.00 per eligible household on tribal territories. A one-time discount of up to $100.00 is also available to eligible households when purchasing a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from partnering suppliers. If they contribute more than $10.00 but less than $50.00 toward the buying price, they are considered contributors.
The eligibility requirements for the Affordable Connectivity Program include:
- They got a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year;
- If they meet the eligibility criteria for a participating provider’s existing low-income internet program;
- If they participate in one of these assistance programs: the National School Lunch Program or the School Breakfast Program, including through the USDA Community Eligibility Provision, SNAP, Medicaid, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), WIC, Veterans Pension or Survivor Benefits, and Lifeline.
- Alternatively, if they participate in one of these assistance programs and live on Qualifying Tribal lands: Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance, Tribal TANF, Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations, and Tribal Head Start.
Over 1,300 internet service providers are already participating in the program, and over 11.5 million households have signed up to enjoy the ACP benefit. For applying for free internet access, visit the official site.
