Florida Residents Could Receive Tax Breaks for Energy-Efficient Appliance Upgrades Under New House Bill

In a significant move towards promoting energy efficiency, bipartisan legislation has been recently introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives, aiming to provide Florida families with substantial tax incentives for upgrading their homes. This initiative, part of the Inflation Reduction Act, offers more than $346 million in tax incentives specifically for the adoption of energy-efficient appliances and clean energy solutions.

The bill, known as the Reforming Energy-Efficient Buildings and Appliances Tax Exemptions (REBATE) Act, H.R. 6536, was led by U.S. Rep. Darren Soto (D-FL) and introduced on November 30, with the support of four other cosponsors. This legislation represents a significant step forward in encouraging households to embrace more sustainable and energy-efficient technologies.

If passed, the REBATE Act would enable local governments in Florida to directly receive federal grants. These grants are intended to support high-efficiency electric home rebate programs, facilitating the transition to energy-efficient solutions at the local level. The bill also serves as a response to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s veto of energy rebates in the state, a move criticized by lawmakers as politically motivated and detrimental to the financial interests of Florida families.

Governor DeSantis’s veto had previously left a substantial amount of federal funds – approximately $346 million – unutilized. This was after Florida’s Office of Energy had applied for rebate programs, only to have that element vetoed in the state’s budget. The REBATE Act aims to bypass the state as an intermediary, allowing local governments to directly access these funds and implement energy-saving programs.

“I’m proud to introduce the bipartisan REBATE Act to allow Florida families access to programs that provide tax incentives if they transition to clean energy,” stated Rep. Soto. He emphasized the commitment to benefiting working families and improving the nation for future generations, as demonstrated by the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act and Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. “In Florida, we refuse to let politically-motivated vetoes get in the way of access to these programs,” he added.

Joining Rep. Soto in this legislative effort are fellow Florida Democrats U.S. Reps. Kathy Castor, Lois Frankel, and Maxwell Alejandro Frost, along with U.S. Rep. Jennifer González Colón (R-PR-). The group collectively recognizes the financial strain that high energy costs impose on Florida families and sees the REBATE Act as a means to alleviate this burden.

“Floridians are being gouged by electric utilities in Florida, and Governor DeSantis’s veto of energy rebates has made it even more expensive for Florida families,” commented Rep. Castor. She highlighted the potential for Floridians to enjoy lower energy bills through access to resources for weatherizing homes and purchasing energy-efficient appliances, as residents in other states are currently doing.
