Relief for Connecticut Homeowners: Energy Assistance Program Underway

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — For Connecticut homeowners who find themselves grappling with skyrocketing energy bills, help is still available through the state’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). According to officials from the Connecticut Association for Community Action, the program remains open for new applications, and if you’re among the state’s most vulnerable, now is the time to take action.

Known in the state as the Connecticut Energy Assistance Program, this vital initiative aims to provide essential heating assistance for those struggling to make ends meet. The program ensures that vulnerable individuals and families can pay their utility bills and other primary energy costs, eliminating the grim prospect of having to go without heat during the chilliest months of the year.

The program is far-reaching, with applications currently being accepted across a variety of regions in the state. Local Connecticut Community Action Agencies are processing applications in Windham, Tolland, Greater Bridgeport, Greater Norwalk, Greater New Haven, Greater Danbury, Greater Stamford, Hartford, and Middlesex Counties. The program is also accessible in Greater New Britain and Bristol, Greater Waterbury, Greater Meriden, the Lower Naugatuck Valley, and the agency office in Southeastern Connecticut.

Furthermore, the federal LIHEAP program could soon receive a significant funding boost. President Biden has proposed an additional $1.6 billion to the program, and if Congress gives the nod, this would be added to Connecticut’s initial allocation of $72 million. This increased funding could make a considerable difference in how many households the program can help.

However, a note of caution from social services officials: Unless state legislators take proactive steps when they reconvene in February, the neediest households might find their assistance dollars stretched thinner than last winter. The situation remains fluid, and it’s crucial for those in need to apply for assistance as soon as possible.
