Bloomington, INDIANA — The City’s Department of Housing and Neighborhood Development (HAND) is set to host an empowering series of Homebuyers Club sessions in 2024. These sessions, spanning five different periods throughout the year, are specifically designed to guide prospective homeowners in the community, particularly focusing on those who are buying a home for the first time. The classes are particularly beneficial for individuals whose income is at or below 80 percent of the area median income (AMI). The overarching goal of these sessions is to enhance the accessibility of homeownership for a broader segment of the community.

HAND’s initiative doesn’t stop at education. Income-qualified residents who complete a Homebuyers Club session and are in the process of purchasing a home within the city limits may be eligible for significant assistance with downpayment and closing costs, courtesy of HAND.

Mayor John Hamilton of Bloomington highlighted the increasing challenges of home purchasing in the current economic climate. “In today’s market, buying a home can seem like an unattainable dream for many in Bloomington,” he said. “The HAND Homebuyer Club, along with our down payment and closing cost assistance program, represent key efforts by the City to make housing more affordable. I strongly encourage our residents to seize this chance to learn how they can turn the dream of homeownership into a reality.”

The Homebuyers Club sessions are comprehensive and cover a wide range of topics essential for prospective homeowners. These include:

Each Homebuyers Club session is structured over two consecutive Saturdays. The first Saturday runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and the second Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Attendance on both Saturdays is mandatory for completing the Club. The scheduled dates for 2024 are as follows:

  • January 20 and 27 (registration now open)
  • April 13 and 20
  • July 13 and 20
  • September 21 and 28
  • November 9 and 16

The Homebuyers Club is open to all community members at no cost. However, due to limited class sizes, pre-registration is required. Registration typically opens about a month before each session.
