South Carolina Rural Home Projects Secure Federal USDA Funding

In Columbia, South Carolina, a new opportunity has emerged for very low-income homeowners in select counties, thanks to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development’s Housing Preservation Grant Program. This federal initiative is set to provide crucial funding for home improvement and repair projects, aiming to enhance living conditions and bolster the infrastructure in these communities.

The USDA’s commitment to this cause is part of a larger national effort, funding over 200 projects across the United States, with four significant projects located in South Carolina. Out of the $81 million allocated for these nationwide projects, South Carolina is set to receive nearly $600,000. The distribution of these funds in South Carolina is being managed by several local organizations, each overseeing a range of home repair and improvement projects. In Allendale County, Allendale County Alive is expected to utilize $100,000 to benefit 7 to 10 households. Meanwhile, in Chesterfield County, the Town of Cheraw has been allocated $198,817, which is projected to assist between 9 to 12 households in Cheraw. Vision by Design will use its $90,000 grant to support 10 households in Clarendon County. Lastly, Horry County W&S has been entrusted with $198,817 to aid approximately 20 households in Horry County.

The USDA’s definition of very low income, which is a key criterion for eligibility, is set at below 50% of the area median income. Additionally, low income is defined as between 50-80% of the area’s median income. These definitions are part of the USDA’s effort to ensure that the funding reaches those who need it most, targeting financial assistance to households that are most financially vulnerable.
