The clock is ticking for Kansas homeowners who need assistance through a federally-backed program. The Kansas Homeowner Assistance Fund (KHAF) is quickly running out of funds, and the program has entered its final phase of funding. The spokeswoman for the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC), Emily Sharp, reports that only a limited window of time remains for homeowners to apply.

Ryan Vincent, the Executive Director of KHRC, which oversees the KHAF program, acknowledged the lingering effects of the pandemic on families and communities across the state. He said that the KHAF program has helped preserve the dream of homeownership for over 3,000 households in need by providing stability to their housing situation.

The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) provided the funding for the KHAF program, which helps eligible Kansas homeowners avoid foreclosure. Homeowners who are at least 30 days past-due on mortgage and property taxes can receive financial assistance for mortgages, utility bills, property taxes, and other associated delinquency fees. Sharp stated that KHAF has distributed over $39 million to 3,549 households in Kansas since its launch in April 2022.

KHAF has a clear process for its closure, which will occur in three phases: Final Funding, Hold, and Closure. The Final Funding phase is currently underway, and homeowners are advised to apply as soon as possible. The Hold phase will commence once the program has received enough applications to use up all its funds. Approval of new applications will be contingent on available funds. The Closure phase will occur when all the program funds have been exhausted, and new applications will no longer be accepted.
