Homeowners in Anoka, Minnesota may be able to get help paying for important home repairs.

The city has opened the SAFE Homes Grant Program. SAFE means Safety, Accessibility, and Functional Efficiency. The program offers grants from $5,000 to $30,000 for eligible homeowners.

What the grant can pay for

The money can help fix unsafe housing problems, make a home easier to use, or lower energy costs.

Eligible repairs may include roof work, electrical repairs, plumbing repairs, water-service problems, heating and cooling replacement, mold or moisture fixes, ventilation work, and some structural repairs.

The grant may also help with accessibility upgrades. Examples include wheelchair ramps, stair lifts, platform lifts, wider doors, grab bars, roll-in showers, accessible toilets, and safer entrances.

Energy-saving work may also qualify. This can include insulation, air sealing, efficient heating and cooling systems, efficient water heaters, heat pumps, and replacement windows or doors.

Who can apply

Applicants must own the home and live in it as their main home. Rental homes, vacation homes, and investment properties do not qualify.

Household income must be below 80% of the area median income set by HUD. The city lists these income limits:

  • 1 person: $72,950
  • 2 people: $83,400
  • 3 people: $93,800
  • 4 people: $104,200
  • 5 people: $112,550
  • 6 people: $120,900
  • 7 people: $129,250
  • 8 people: $137,550

Homeowners must also be current on their property taxes.

What is not covered

The program is not for luxury upgrades or basic cosmetic work. It does not cover projects like granite countertops, landscaping, sheds, fences, or flooring replaced only for looks.

Work started before city approval will not qualify. Homeowners should wait for approval before hiring a contractor or starting construction.

How to apply

Applications are available through the City of Anoka SAFE Homes Grant Program. Funding is limited and applications are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis while money is available.

Questions can be directed to Anoka Housing and Redevelopment Authority Executive Director Darin Berger at 763-576-2724.
