Bay Area Homeowners: Get Up to $10,500 to Replace Your Fireplace with a Heat Pump
What Is the Clean HEET Program?
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District is giving out grants to homeowners who want to get rid of their wood-burning stoves or fireplaces and switch to electric heat pumps. The program is called Clean HEET, and it is open right now for all Bay Area homeowners.
This is real money — not a loan. Depending on your situation, you could get between $1,000 and $10,500 to help pay for the switch.
How Much Money Can You Get?
The grant amount depends on what kind of device you currently have and how old it is:
- Free-standing wood stove or fireplace insert (2014 or older): up to $6,500
- Open-hearth or free-standing fireplace (any age): up to $6,000
- Pellet-burning stove or insert (2014 or older): up to $3,000
- Second device bonus: add $3,000 more if you have a second unit
- Low-income bonus: add another $4,000 if your household qualifies
So a low-income homeowner replacing two older wood stoves could get the full $10,500.
Who Can Apply?
Any homeowner in the Bay Area is eligible. You do not have to be low-income to apply — the low-income bonus is just extra money on top of the base grant.
Your device must currently be working. The program does not pay you back for work you have already done, so do not start your project before getting approved.
What Is a Heat Pump?
A heat pump is a machine that goes outside your home. It heats your house in the winter and cools it in the summer — all in one system. It runs on electricity instead of burning wood, so it creates much less air pollution. Many homeowners say their energy bills go down after switching.
