Bay Area Homeowners Can Get Up to $10,500 to Replace Old Stoves with Heat Pumps
What Is the Clean HEET Program?
If you live in the Bay Area and still heat your home with a wood or pellet stove, there is money available to help you switch to a cleaner, cheaper option. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District launched the Clean HEET initiative to help homeowners replace old wood-burning appliances with electric heat pumps.
The program is open right now. You can apply until July 14, 2026.
How Much Money Can You Get?
The amount you can receive depends on your situation:
- $3,000 to $6,500 — base grant for replacing a qualifying wood or pellet stove with a heat pump
- $3,000 more — if you replace a second qualifying appliance
- $4,000 more — if your household qualifies as low-income
- Up to $10,500 total — for low-income households replacing two appliances
Who Can Apply?
You need to be a homeowner in the Bay Area who currently uses a wood or pellet stove or fireplace as a heating source. The goal of the program is to reduce air pollution from wood smoke, which is a major source of fine particle pollution in the region.
How Do You Apply?
Visit the Bay Area Air Quality Management District website to apply for the Clean HEET grant. The application portal is open now. Bay Area cities like San Mateo are actively promoting this program on social media, and contractors can also participate by offering rebates and incentives to their customers.
Why a Heat Pump?
Heat pumps are efficient electric systems that both heat and cool your home. They can lower your monthly energy bills and protect you from rising fuel prices. When paired with solar panels, your energy costs drop even further.
"After a frigid winter and with hot summers ahead, now is a great time to upgrade to an electric heat pump," the Bay Area Air District wrote on Instagram.
